In my last Chairman’s Corner Column, I observed that while Durham’s AAA debt rating has been reaffirmed, the rating agency issued a “negative outlook” for Durham.  I then remarked that we have arrived at this point due to folks like Councilman Mike Woodard – whom I affectionately refer to as Tax Hike Mike – voting for tax increases to support their big spending habits.  Councilman Woodard did not like my comments. Chairman’s Corner Column

For the past couple of weeks, we have witnessed a crisis in confidence as investors react to the news that Standard & Poor’s has downgraded their rating of the US Government debt. In the midst of all the news of this financial turmoil, you might, however, have missed a little bit of news buried in the back of the Herald Sun. Moody’s – another rating agency – announced on August 4th that although they were reaffirming Durham’s AAA debt rating, they had given Durham’s debt level a negative outlook. In other words, Moody’s is warning investors that if Durham doesn’t improve its fiscal discipline, it too may have its bond rating downgraded.

            By now, most everybody knows that a helicopter in Afghanistan was shot down by someones [sic, plural] (terrorists? Insurgents? “freedom fighters?”)  Remember (A) who they were avenging, and (B) one of the principal promises of the Obama Administration during the campaign.  Read on.

            Osama Bin Laden was unarmed, the reports now say.  People wonder how the Navy SEALS (always capitalized – I have it from a good authority) could just go in and kill him, knowing Osama did not have any way (other than his wife’s body) to defend himself.  To be fair, the SEAL who fired the fatal shots did not know if Osama had a suicide jacket; a dead man cannot pull a string or push a button.

            But there are other reasons why Osama could never be taken alive, and it goes back to the 2008 election.  Continue reading
