2012 County Convention

On Saturday, March 17 the Durham County Republican Party held its annual convention.

The convention began with precinct meetings.
After the precinct business, candidates for office were each given 3 minutes to explain why we should choose them. We also had numerous opportunities to chat with candidates before and after the convention.

The candidates were followed by the debate over a resolution
supporting Amendment 1 to the North Carolina Constitution.
The debate was spirited but very friendly. Durham County Republicans
rose to voice their support or opposition to this measure.
The resolution passed on a voice vote. The convention also passed two other resolutions, one supporting a water line extension in Rougemont, the other opposing the Downtown Durham Business Improvement District.
The text of all three resolutions can be found below:

Chairman’s Corner Column

Last year, we had a fair number of people coming to the convention for the first time.  As rookie convention goers, they did not know that we had to go through the exercise of approving the Plan of Organization.  Unfortunately, there were a couple of people who wanted to debate some of the changes within the plan.  As a result, this process went on so long that we almost lost some of the first time convention goers.

While approving the Plan of Organization is certainly a part of the process, I want to eliminate as much of the debate as possible at this year’s convention.  One of our goals for this year’s convention is to attract new convention goers so as to help us find volunteers for the many roles that we have to fill in this very big election year.

As a result, you’ll find the proposed proposed Plan of Organization with the few changes that have been suggested by clicking on the link above.  Please review the document and reply back with any proposed changes that you’d like to see.  It is important that we hear from as many of you as possible so as to limit the number of proposed changes that we hear while at the convention.  The goal is to approve the Plan of Organization in less than 5 minutes!

Furthermore, at the convention we will be voting on a resolution supporting the Marriage Amendment.  The The draft resolution is attached here. If this resolution passes, the official position of the Durham Republican Party will be to support the Marriage Amendment.  So please review this draft in advance of the convention.  Please also feel free to provide feedback to me in advance of the convention.

If you haven’t registered for the convention, please register today by going to the website.  There are no registration fees this year … though we welcome donations to cover the cost.

Please register for the convention and consider making a donation today.

Chairman’s Corner Column

Don’t Pick Up Your Ball And Go Home

Earlier this week, one of our hard working volunteers emailed me to announce his exit from active participation in the party.   He indicated that while he believed that the Republican Party in Durham is the best hope to affect change in Durham, he was offended by the state and national Republican Party.  So this volunteer decided to abandon the field.  A day or two later, a different activist threatened to quit because he was upset with what he was witnessing on the state and national scene.  While neither activist said anything about the marriage amendment, I suspect that it is their opposition to the amendment that drove them away.   Continue reading
